THRILLING KANSAS CITY
In a room before anyone speaks, in a bar after midnight, in the object someone leaves behind, Kansas City shows itself.
Thrilling Kansas City is a series of reports by Frank Bond on the city’s people, places and peculiarities—from ballparks and churches to grand hotels, cheap bars and forgotten corners.
Frank Bond is a writer and violinist whose route to the middle of America was not direct. London came first. Samoan roots complicated the map. Then music schools, an improbable interval in international football, and years carrying a violin case throughout Europe, North Africa, Polynesia and the United States.
He has spent much of his life arriving somewhere from somewhere else. Along the way, he acquired the habit of noticing what people would rather he had missed.
After that, the record becomes less tidy.
More recently, driving has proved an unexpectedly useful observation post. At four in the morning, Kansas City belongs to airport workers, nurses and people returning from nights they may prefer not to explain. A passenger gets in, says very little, and leaves something behind.
